Sara T. Behrman, children’s author, is a former professional librarian, a freelance writer, frequent visitor to classrooms, well-received book-talker, and a popular workshop leader at the Oregon Writing Festival.
Sara’s first children’s book, The Sea Hides A Seahorse was published on April 9, 2024 by The Collective Book Studio, and is being distributed by Simon & Schuster.
In April 2024, Sara was awarded a $5,000 Arts grant by the Regional Arts and Culture Council to support her debut year as a children’s book author. In December 2024, Sara was awarded a $2,000 Career Development grant by the Oregon Arts Commission to support her 2025 mini book tour to California’s Bay Area.
She has also published 40 feature articles and creative pieces in regional and national publications, including Oregon Humanities, American Libraries, and School Library Journal.
Sara was born on a small island (Manhattan Island) and has been entranced by the ocean since she got lost at the beach when she was four years old and saw her first whale. Sara loves to travel and speaks several languages; she has visited forty (and counting!) countries so far. When not spending the day at the beach, or traveling to visit the world’s oceans, Sara studied Russian in the former Soviet Union; completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Comparative Literature and Russian; earned her graduate degree at the University of Iowa in Library Science; and worked in libraries in Iowa, Wisconsin, New York, Washington, and Michigan. She lived in Portland, Oregon from 2000 until 2026, during which she offered her multimillion-dollar grant writing expertise on a contractual basis. She estimates her grant writing has raised $200 million for her clients, give or take a few hundred thousand.
In 2026, Sara moved to Maine, where she now lives next to a salt marsh. Here, the fresh water meets the ebb and flow of the tide, and ends with the crashing ocean waves.
Her last name is pronounced BEARman.
