Michael Smith is a Maine-based writer, recovery advocate, entrepreneur, and behavioral healthcare executive. He is currently writing The Tyranny of Blessings: A Memoir of Addiction, Achievement, and the Work of Becoming Whole, a memoir exploring addiction, identity, ambition, fatherhood, loss, recovery, and the complicated work of building a life after surviving the crisis that once defined it.
Raised in Maine, Smith entered recovery in 2003. His early years of sobriety included living at Serenity House in Portland and attending Southern Maine Community College before continuing his education at the University of North Texas.
Over the following two decades, Smith built a career developing and leading organizations in addiction treatment and recovery. His professional experience has included founding and operating recovery-focused organizations and serving in executive leadership roles within behavioral healthcare. He currently serves as CEO of Recovery Connections of Maine.
His writing draws on more than two decades of recovery and professional experience while examining broader questions of identity, relationships, achievement, responsibility, grief, service, and what happens after a person gets the life he once believed would make him whole.
Smith lives in Maine and is developing The Tyranny of Blessings for traditional publication.
